Why We Launched the School of Self-Success

At Success Recruit, we’ve spent years helping businesses build brilliant teams and helping job seekers find roles where they can thrive, grow, and stay.

But we realised something important: No matter how great the CV looked, no matter how keen a job seeker was, if they weren’t work-ready, the placement often didn’t stick.

We know what employers want.  Because they tell us, every day.

“We can teach someone the job.  What we really need is someone who’s ready to show up, listen, and get stuck in.” says Vicki Shelton, Founder of Success Recruit and SOS.

That’s why we created the School of Self-Success (SOS) – a programme designed by recruiters, built for young people, and backed by the real-world insight we’ve gained through placing hundreds of job seekers across Essex and beyond.

Why SOS Matters

For years, we’ve seen the same gap:

  • Young people leaving school with qualifications but no idea how to write a professional email.
  • First-jobbers turning up late to interviews . Not because they didn’t care, but because no one told them how to prepare.
  • Great potential wasted because no one had taught the basics: confidence, communication, and conduct.

And we knew it wasn’t their fault.

As recruiters, we’re the bridge between employers and job seekers. And we could see clearly where the system was letting the next generation down.

“As recruiters, we know what employers are looking for but more importantly, we understand what young people are lacking. Not because they’re not capable, but because they’ve never been shown.” says Vicki.

What Makes SOS Different?

The School of Self-Success isn’t another careers programme.  It’s a practical, employer-informed course that gives young people the tools, mindset, and self-awareness they need to start out in their career strong.

It’s built around the real conversations we’ve had with business owners, hiring managers, and job seekers over the past 20+ years.

Each module is focused on real-world employability:

  • Building self-awareness and workplace confidence
  • Learning how to communicate clearly and professionally
  • Navigating feedback, conflict, and difficult conversations
  • Showing initiative, reliability, and resilience from day one

We’ve also included dedicated guidance for families, so parents and carers can better support their young adults on the journey into work.

Vicki commented: “We’ve taken everything we know as recruiters, everything employers consistently value and built a course that helps young people walk into their first role with clarity and confidence.”

Built With Employers in Mind

SOS doesn’t just help young people, it helps the businesses that hire them.

We know that entry-level hires are often the foundation of a growing team. But only if they’re work-ready.

From punctuality and presentation to attitude and adaptability, SOS helps embed the soft skills and self-awareness that make the difference between a short-term hire and a long-term asset.

“We want our clients to hire people who aren’t just qualified, but capable. People who turn up on time, bring the right energy, and understand how to function in a team,”

For employers, SOS acts as a pre-onboarding filter:

 ✅ It sets expectations.
✅ It reduces early dropouts.
✅ It makes hiring young talent less risky — and more rewarding.

Where It’s Going…?

We’ve launched SOS with two key pathways:

👩‍🎓 For young adults (under 25):  A self-paced learning journey to build essential employability skills before stepping into the world of work.

🏢 For employers: A workplace-ready version of the course is coming soon to help junior hires hit the ground running- watch this space!

And we’re only just getting started.

We’re already partnering with schools, colleges, and business leaders to bring SOS into more communities because every young person deserves the chance to succeed.

“Confidence comes from competence. And when you know how to show up well, speak professionally, and carry yourself in a workplace, you walk into your first job with a completely different energy. That’s what SOS is here to create.” – Vicki Shelton
